History of Golf

Golf has its roots in Scotland, where it was played as early as the 15th century. The modern game of golf, as we know it today, emerged in the 18th century. The first recorded rules of golf were established in 1744 by the Company of Gentlemen Golfers, later renamed The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.

Golf gained popularity throughout the 19th century and spread to other parts of the world, particularly England and North America. The establishment of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1754 and the formation of the United States Golf Association (USGA) in 1894 were significant milestones in golf's history.

The first major championships, The Open Championship (British Open) and the U.S. Open, were inaugurated in 1860 and 1895, respectively. The Masters Tournament, one of golf's prestigious major championships, began in 1934.

Golf became an Olympic sport in 1900 but was later dropped after 1904. However, it made a return to the Olympic Games in 2016.

Over the years, professional golfers like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, and Annika Sörenstam have achieved legendary status and greatly influenced the sport. Today, golf is played and enjoyed by millions of people worldwide, both professionally and recreationally.
